Two people died while three others were injured in a hit and run accident in Quezon province Saturday evening.

Candelaria Municipal Police acting chief of Police Lieutenant Colonel France Allex Reglos, in a phone interview with The Daily Manila Shimbun, identified the fatalities as Lito Leynes, 39, and Rosalinda Leynes, 63.

Reglos said the two succumbed to death while undergoing medical treatment after they were hit by a van around 7pm along Maharlika Highway, Barangay Masin Norte in Candelaria town.

Two children, one and two years old, respectively, and relatives of the two fatalities, and certain Angelica Bazar were injured in the mishap.

Reglos said the victims were crossing the road when the vehicle going south bound accidentally bumped them.

He said they were still looking for witnesses who could tell them of what really transpired.

As of press time, the driver of the vehicle figured in the incident was still at large but the police officers were able to recover the abandoned van along crossing of Candelaria-San Juan bypass at Malabanban Sur.

“Usually the suspects left their vehicle because of fear of being mobbed by the public and will eventually report to the police station but the suspect just left his vehicle,” said Reglos.

He said they would check the plate number of the car at Land Transportation Office on Monday for possible identification of the suspect.

“There might be identification cards inside the vehicle but we prefer to seek permission first before opening it to prevent misunderstanding,” he said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
