391 GCTA beneficiaries surrender 5 days before 15-day ultimatum lapses

The number of convicts earlier freed under the good conduct time allowance law and who surrendered to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) five days before the expiration of President Rodrigo Duterte's ultimatum rose to 391.

According to data provided by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday, 249 out of 391 surrenderees were already under the custody of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Most of the convicts who showed up to the authorities came from Mimaropa (Mindoro- Marinduque- Romblon- Palawan) with a total of 50.

A total of 32 surrenderees came from Cagayan Valley, 22 from Ilocos, 19 from Zamboanga Peninsula, 17 each from Central Luzon and Bicol Regions, 16 from Central Visayas, 14 from National Capital Region, 12 each from Cordillera and Northern Mindanao, eight from Soccsksargen (South Cotabato- Cotabato- Sultan Kudarat- Sarangani- General Santos City), six from Eastern Visayas, five from Caraga, and four from Western Visayas.

Meanwhile, most of the surrenderees were convicted murderers and rapists with 130 and 117, respectively.

Duterte earlier gave the inmates 15 days to surrender or until September 19. If they fail, they would be considered fugitives and subject of manhunt operations. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
