April 8, 2017
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Batangas on Saturday, the second in five days, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake is at two kilometer north and 68 degrees west of Mabini, Batangas. The quake, which was tectonic in origin has a depth of four kilometers. Batangas Gov. Hermilando Mandanas told dzBB that no casualty was reported and said initial damage from the quake was minor. "But this one is stronger compared to last Tuesday," said Mandanas. "The earthquake is strongly felt here in Batangas because the epicenter is near the city." Travelers in Batangas Port panicked when the quake hit shortly after 3 pm, television news footage showed. A radio report said areas in Sampaloc, Manila lost power. (Robina Asido/DMS)
