538 kilos of ”hot meat” seized in Divisoria

July 17, 2019

About 538 kilos of ''hot meat'' was confiscated in Manila on Wednesday.

During a surprise inspection by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and personnel of Manila Veterinary Inspection Board, these '' hot meat'' were discovered in Elcano Street in Divisoria. The seized ''hot meat'', also known as '' double dead meat'' was estimated at P80,000.

''Hot meat'' refers to remaining body parts of the dead animal after edible portions were removed. Meat slaughtered by unaccredited meat establishments is also considered ''hot meat''. It is usually unsafe for human consumption.

Moreno warned the public to be observant when buying meat.

"If it is not inspected by accredited slaughterhouse, it is not safe," he said.

"It's food. We cannot just send these to our markets. People eat these. The public's safety is at stake here," he added.

According to Moreno, the inspection was made after a citizen reported about ''hot meat'' being sold in the streets.

"Thank you for helping us in imposing order in the City of Manila," Moreno told the netizens. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
