Moscow--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said he aims for a resolution acceptable both to his country and Russia in bilateral peace treaty talks, the Interfax news agency reported Sunday.
In an interview with the Russian news agency, Abe said he intends to hold close talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to achieve a resolution acceptable to both countries.
Tokyo hopes to resolve the two countries' territorial dispute over the Russian-held northwestern Pacific islands off Hokkaido in order to conclude a World War II peace treaty.
Abe and Putin are slated to have a meeting in Moscow on Tuesday.
The Japanese leader also said he is looking forward to meeting Putin at the Group of 20 summit in Osaka in June.
Abe reportedly aims to reach a broad agreement on the conclusion of the peace treaty with Putin during his visit to Japan in June. Jiji Press
