Albayalde quietly retires from PNP service

Former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Oscar Albayalde quietly retired from the service Friday, weeks after he stepped down due to allegations he protected “ninja cops” or police selling illegal drugs confiscated during raids.
Albayalde, the 22nd chief of the 191,000-strong PNP, turned 56 Friday, the mandatory retirement age for police officers. He went on non-duty status on Oct 14 due to controversies.
Appointed as PNP officer-in-charge was Police Lt. General Archie Francisco Gamboa.
Asked about his plans, Albayalde said he will '' spend quality time with his family''.
He celebrated his birthday with a few close friends.
Police Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesman, said Albayalde did not avail of the traditional retirement ceremony.
Retirement honors coincide with the turnover ceremony but President Rodrigo Duterte has yet to chose Albayalde's successor.
“This is optional and General Albayalde did not avail of this,” Banac said in a press briefing at Camp Crame. DMS
