April 2, 2019

An alleged member of New People's Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with government forces that lasted for nearly four hours in Agusan Del Norte on Saturday.

Capt. Regie Go, spokesman of the 4th Infantry Division, said the military and police forces raided the hideout of the armed men at the vicinity of Brgy. Mahaba, Cabadbaran City.

"Acting on reports from concerned civilians, troops under the 29th Infantry Battalion swooped down on the terrorists numbering about 50, and engaged them in a firefight that lasted almost four hours," he said.

Go said troops also recovered high-powered firearms during the operation.

"One terrorist died on the spot while others scampered away in different directions leaving behind one M16 5.56mm rifle, three AK-47 rifles, and seven backpacks containing personal belongings, extortion letters and other terrorist documents," he said.

"Heavy bloodstains were also seen along their route of withdrawal indicating the fleeing terrorists have scores of wounded with them," he added.

Go said prior to the operation they received reports the rebels were conducting extortion.

"Earlier, Army units in the province particularly the 402nd Brigade have been constantly receiving reports of NPA presence and extortion demands among the local populace and private enterprises," he said.

"The military and police also monitored movements indicating plans by the said terror group to gather food and money as part of their anniversary celebration," he added. Robina Asido/DMS
