An alleged member of New People's Army (NPA) was killed while a soldier was wounded in a 30-minute encounter in Zamboanga Sibugay on Wednesday afternoon.
Capt. Clint Antipala, spokesman of the 1st Infantry Division, said troops under 44th Infantry Battalion and the NPA figured in an encounter in Brgy Diampak, Kabasalan around 3 pm.
Antipala said according to Lt. Col. Don Templonuevo, 44th Infantry Battalion commander, his troops were conducting operations in response to the reported presence of rebels in the area.
“Our troops immediately responded to the call of the local populace about the presence of armed CNTs (communist terrorists) in their community that are extorting money and foodstuffs. While we are approaching, the CNTs fired upon us which led to a firefight,” Templonuevo said.
Antipala said the firefight resulted in the recovery of one M16 rifle, magazines, ammunition and subversive documents with high intelligence value.
Antipala said additional troops were sent to pursue the armed men while police crime scene operatives investigated the encounter area.
"The troops of 44IB are also in close coordination with the barangay officials to ensure the safety and security of the residents in the area," he said. Robina Asido/DMS
