Army officials visit Indian guided missile frigate

October 25, 2019

Philippine Army officials visited an Indian guided missile frigate in Manila on Thursday.

Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, Philippine Army spokesman, said  Army Vice Commander Maj. Gen. Reynaldo Aquino and other officers toured the Indian Navy Ship Sahyadri, a guided missile frigate, docked at Pier 15 in South Harbor.

Zagala said “part of the tour and briefing was a discussion about India’s BrahMos, the world’s fastest supersonic missile that can be launched from ship, aircraft, submarine or land.”

“The Philippine Army is interested in acquiring this type of missile as it will strengthen our coastal defense operations,” he said.

“In line with the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Integrated Missile Defense System program, the PA aims to advance its coordination with the Philippine Navy and Air Force in the safeguarding the country from external threats,” he added.

Zagala said “earlier this month, the Army activated its first land-based Missile System Battery under the Army Artillery Regiment.”

“The unit is currently working on its training programs before acquiring its future equipment. The Philippine Army puts premium in upgrading the various areas of its defense capabilities as it plays a vital role in addressing external threats,” he said.

Sahvadri arrived in Manila with Kiltan, a Kamorta-class antisubmarine warfare corvette, last Wednesday.
