March 14, 2020
Ayala Malls said it cut mall hours by three on Saturday as well as temporarily halting all Ayala Malls cinemas due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare.
This following the Metro Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) call for one month closure of malls in Metro Manila to slow down the movement of people and control the spread of COVID-19.
"In compliance with the government directive on the implementation of the Metro Manila-wide curfew, Metro Manila Ayala Malls will be closing at 7:00 pm today, March 14, 2020, as we prioritize the health and safety of everyone," the statement read.
It clarified that the adjusted mall schedule is only effective for Saturday evening only.
"We will keep you posted for new developments and schedule adjustments soon," said Ayala Malls.
Ayala Malls cinemas said all operations will be cancelled starting Sunday.
"In compliance with Resolution #12 of the government directive on Stringent Social Distancing Measures, we will be closing our cinemas effective March 15, 2020 as we prioritize the health and safety of everyone," a separate statement posted in Facebook read.
According to MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia, malls and other entertainment establishments are requested to close to stop people from going outside their houses.
"We requested for malls if they can close down except its supermarkets, groceries, banks, pharmacies and other essential establishments," Garcia explained. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
