Cop dies days after shootout with robbers in Manila

A policeman and two robbery suspects after a shootout in Sta Cruz, Manila on December 11.

Police Corporal Edgil Bombase died last Sunday while the alleged robber, Rodel Vicente was  shot by the cop. The other robber, Antonio Yap, escaped but was caught a few hours later on the same day.

Both suspects were brought to a hospital but were declared dead on arrival. Bombase was operated on for his wounds but died on Sunday. 

"PCpl Bombase died due to multiple organ failure at 3:10 pm yesterday, December 15, 2019," said Police Brigadier General Debold Sinas, acting National Capital Region director, said in a statement on Monday.

Sinas honored Bombase and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. 

According to a police report, Bombase's team was sent to Sta. Cruz to validate if there was a robbery conduct a follow-up operation. 

Around 10:30 pm, Bombase received information regarding two armed individuals spotted near Tomas Mapua and Antipolo streets.

The cops  arrived at the location around 10:35  pm when Vicente, fired at the policemen, hitting Bombase several times. 

Vicente was wounded by Bombase while Yap fled. 

A follow-up operation was done at 11:30 pm resulting to another shootout  between cops and the escaped suspects. Police arrested Yap who was wounded. 

Seized from the scene were one 99 mm caliber Glock 17 pistol, 50 grams of suspected shabu, P130,400 in cash, a high standard sentinel caliber .22 revolver, 26 pieces of unknown drugs believed to be ecstasy, several pieces of silver jewelry, ammunition, two mobile phones and other documents. 

"In the strongest sense, the National Capital Region Police Office condemns another killing of our dear comrade," Sinas said. 

"(H)e died with honor and integrity of having accomplished the mission of neutralizing one notorious robbery/hold-up suspect. he is NCRPO's police hero. 

The NCRPO will recommend a posthumous award of Medalya ng Kadakilaan to Bombase. The Philippine National Police (PNP) also offered to shoulder Bombase's hospital and funeral expenses.  Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
