DOH declares measles outbreak in four more regions

Two regions in Luzon and two in Visayas, are experiencing outbreaks of measles, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday. 

In a press conference, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they are expanding coverage of the measles outbreak after cases rose this year as of January 26.

“We are expanding the outbreak from Metro Manila to the other regions as cases have increased in the past weeks,” said Duque.

The four regions are Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, and Central Luzon. 

Duque said the lack of vaccine confidence by the Dengvaxia controversy is the main reason for the measles outbreak.

“Vaccine coverage has gone to the pathetic levels. The rate of those unprotected by vaccines is continuously growing,” he said. ''Whenever the rate of unprotected goes more than half of the population, you can really expect outbreaks,” added Duque.

“We really are asking everybody to please go to the health centers and have yourselves vaccinated,” said Duque. 

Data shows Calabarzon reported 575 cases with nine deaths compared to 21 cases in 2018.

Central Luzon had 192 cases with four deaths, from 32 cases in 2018. Western Visayas recorded 104 cases and three deaths from 16 cases in 2018. 

Central Visayas had 71 cases with one death,  compared to two cases in 2018.

National Capital Region, where the DOH announced a measles outbreaks Wednesday, showed 441 cases with five deaths  from 36 cases in 2018.

Duque called for vigilance over measles cases in Mimaropa (70), Ilocos Region (64), Northern Mindanao (60), Eastern Visayas (54), and Soccsksargen (43).

“These regions should likewise step-up their response against this highly communicable disease, as well as ensure that preventive measures play a vital role in preventing the spread of the disease,” said Duque. DMS
