DOTr asks Uber, Grab vehicles to register also with LTFRB
July 18, 2017
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade reiterated on Tuesday the need for Transportation Network Vehicles to get a franchise from the government for the protection of the riding public. In a press briefing in Malacanang, Tugade said there are around 56,000 TNVs, which are affiliated with the Transport Network Corporation, such as Uber and Grab. "Out of that 56,000 plying on the streets, only less than 10 percent were registered," he said. He explained that TNVs are in the concept and nature of public utility and therefore, they should be covered by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. Tugade said the LTFRB has to make sure the vehicles are functioning well and the drivers are capable to do the job. There should also be insurance in using such vehicle, he added. Tugade said a technical working group would be created by the LTFRB to deal with the issue of the TNC and TNVs. Many Filipinos have been using the services of the TNVs as substitute to taxis.
