DOTr open to privatizating operation and maintenance of LRT-2
October 9, 2019
The Department of Transportation (DoTr) on Wednesday said it is open to the privatization of the operation and maintenance of Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2.
“Those are options that are open. Whether it will materialize, only the future can tell,” DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade told reporters.
Tugade's statement came after a portion of the LRT-2 was damaged due to electrical fire between Anonas and Katipunan last October 3.
The Light Rail Transit Authority ( LRTA) suspended operations in three stations of the LRT 2 until mid-2020 and would need over P400 million to repaid the damaged sections of LRT 2.
LRT 2 service resumed on Tuesday, but it runs only from Cubao to Recto.
LRT2 was built at a cost of P31 billion in soft loans. It opened in 2003.
The Light Rail Manila Corp., of Ayala Corp. and Metro Pacific Investments Corp. operates LRT Line 1, while the governments operates the Metro Rail Transit Line 3. DMS
