Duterte eyeing to increase salary of teachers
January 9, 2018
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered concerned government agencies to look for ways to increase the salary of public school teachers.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said during the Cabinet meeting on Monday, Duterte instructed the Department of Budget and Management and other agencies to find means to raise the salary of teachers after the initial doubling of salaries of military and police personnel.
"So the teachers will be next," he said.
Roque could not say if Duterte's order was also to double the salary of teachers.
"He did not say how much but he says that they will have to be tangible results of any implementation of the second tax reform package and he said that should be the increase in teachers’ salary," he said.
Duterte has directed the Department of Finance to submit to Congress the second package of the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program.
"But judging by what he wanted for the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), it could be that he is also aiming to double the entry salary for teachers," Roque added. Celerina Monte/DMS
