Duterte seeks support of parliaments in attaining ASEAN Community Vision 2025
September 19, 2017
President Rodrigo Duterte urged on Tuesday the Southeast Asian lawmakers to continue with their role in helping achieve the ASEAN Community Vision by 2025.
In a speech during the closing ceremony of the 38th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Leaders in Makati City, Duterte underscored the contribution of AIPA in speeding up the ratification of the ASEAN agreements.
"As a parliamentary institution, the AIPA could be encouraged to actively pursue the reforms needed to address structural problems and constraints that limit the gains [from] integration within the region," he said.
"I call upon ASEAN and AIPA to further deepen their engagement and partnership so that we can bring about the realization of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 – entailing a united, inclusive, and resilient political-security community; a highly integrated and cohesive economic community; and a socio-cultural community that engages [and] benefits the peoples of ASEAN," Duterte said.
