Embassy of Japan signs grant contract for Philippine-Japan Historical Museum renovation

The Embassy of Japan signed last November 28 a 10 million yen (approximately 4.7 million pesos) grant contract with the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc. (PNJK), a non-governmental organization based in Davao City.

The grant, which comes through the Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects, will be used for the renovation and preservation of the Philippine-Japan Historical Museum in Davao, an embassy statement said Thursday.

In particular, it will facilitate the repair and replacement of damaged museum structures, the upgrading of existing displays, and the acquisition and installation of new materials and devices.

Yoshiaki Miwa, counsellor and director of the Consular Office of Japan in Davao, signed the grant contract on behalf of the Japanese Government, while PNJK was represented by its president,  retired judge Antonina B. Escovilla.

The Philippine-Japan Historical Museum was built in 1994 in Calinan, Davao City. It features exhibits on the historical ties between Japan and Davao, beginning in the 1900s when Japanese immigrants first arrived in Davao.

It is hoped that the museum’s restoration, made possible through grant assistance, will contribute to the further enhancement of mutual understanding and deepened relations between the Philippines and Japan. DMS
