Empress Masako performs official duty without Emperor

Tokyo, May 22 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Empress Masako attended an annual convention of the Japanese Red Cross Society in Tokyo on Wednesday, performing her first official duty without her husband, Emperor Naruhito, since he ascended the throne on May 1.
The Empress was greeted with a standing ovation when she entered the venue. At the event, she presented awards to individuals and organizations to mark their achievements in Red Cross activities.
She became honorary president of the Japanese Red Cross Society on May 1, a role held by a sitting Empress since Empress Nagako, wife of Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, assumed the position.
At the convention, Empress Masako was joined by Crown Princess Kiko and other Imperial Family members.
Empress Masako, who has been under medical treatment, attended last year's convention as Crown Princess in her first participation in the event in 15 years. Jiji Press
