Malacanang said on Tuesday the resignation of Lt. Gen. Ronnie Evangelista as superintendent of Philippine Military Academy was a step to maintain the integrity of the military institution following the fatal hazing of a cadet.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Evangelista's resignation could be considered delicadeza on his part after 4th Class Cadet Darwin Dormitorio died allegedly due to hazing.
"We welcome this development as a right step towards upholding the integrity of the PMA as a the country's premier military institution and recognize the same as a form of genuine delicadeza on the part of Lt. Gen. Evangelista," he said in a statement.
He said the investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing.
Panelo, also the chief presidential legal counsel, said the Office of the President is assuring that there will be no whitewash in the probe.
He also said the public could expect that justice will be rendered for those responsible for the PMA plebe's death.
Three PMA upperclassmen were being investigated for their alleged involvement in the fatal incident. Celerina Monte/DMS
