Firecracker-related injuries double in a day but no deaths: DOH

Firecracker-related injuries nearly doubled over the last 24 hours to start the new year, but no deaths were reported by the Department of Health ( DOH) Thursday.
From 164 recorded on January 1 , there are 288 firecracker-related injuries as of 6 pm, January 2, according to the Fireworks-Related Injury Surveillance 2019 Report No. 12.
"There were 124 additional cases of firecracker-related injuries reported by the 61 sentinel hospitals," said DOH.
The 288 is lower by 25 cases (eight percent) from the same period last year.
Legal fireworks kwitis (63), fountain (32), and luces (32) were the top causes of injuries. Piccolo, an illegal firecracker, accounted for 17 cases.
Half of injuries took place in the National Capital Region with 143; followed by Western Visayas with 29; Ilocos with 26; and Calabarzon with 22.
Seven in 10 victims of firecrackers were men with 201. DMS
