Five to eight more typhoons may enter Philippines until December – NDRRMC
October 21, 2020
Five to eight more typhoons are expected to enter the Philippines before the end of the year, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Tuesday.
NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad, in a televised press briefing, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) initially gave an advisory that there would be seven to 10 typhoons that are expected to enter the country.
When the information was given, Tropical Depression ''Ofel'' and Tropical Storm ''Pepito'' had not affected the Philippines.
"So, meaning we can expect perhaps five to eight more typhoons until the end of December," Jalad said.
He also warned that based on experience, usually there are one or two destructive typhoons that visit the country every year.
Jalad said this was the reason NDRRMC conducted pre-disaster risk assessment meetings and preparedness measures, not only for the typhoons, but for the La Niña phenomenon as well.
The Philippines is visited by an average of 20 typhoons yearly. Celerina Monte/DMS
