August 2, 2019

Five persons, including popular Filipino musician Ryan Cayabyab, won this year's Ramon Magsaysay Award on Friday.

Ko Se Win of Myanmar and Ravish Kumar of India espoused press freedom and upholding standards of  journalism standards.

Kim Jong-ki of South Korea spearheaded an anti-bullying campaign and Angkhana Neelapaijit from Thailand bannered a ''systematic, unflagging work to reform a flawed and unfair legal system.''

“The Magsaysay awardees of 2019,”says Ramon Magsaysay Foundation president Carmencita Abella, “all reflect courage undaunted, in their commitment to build solutions to vital and complex issues in their societies.

Ko showed ''undaunted commitment to practice independent, ethical, and socially engaged journalism in Myanmar'' while Kumar displayed ''unfaltering commitment to a professional, ethical journalism of the highest standards.''

In mobilizing an anti-bullying campaign, Kim showed ''quiet courage in transforming private grief into a mission to protect Korea’s youth from the scourge of bullying and violence.''

Cayabyab was honored for ''his compositions and performances that have defined and inspired Filipino popular music across generations.''

The five persons will be awarded on September 9 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. DMS
