Japan adopts program to raise cybersecurity awareness

Tokyo--The Japanese government adopted Thursday a program aimed at enhancing people's awareness about cybersecurity and strengthening efforts to avoid falling victim to cybercrimes.

It was adopted at a meeting of the government's Cyber Security Strategy Headquarters, headed by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

The program features the opening of a portal site targeted at small companies, which tend to lag behind in taking cybersecurity measures, and also at young people, who are often vulnerable to cybercrimes.

The site will introduce recommended cybersecurity measures that vary depending on the size of the company or which age group the user belongs to.

"I ask you to establish a new framework for supporting small companies, take steps to improve young people's (cybersecurity) literacy and step up the dispatch of related information to the public," Suga told other participants of the headquarters' meeting.

The program also includes a plan to create a public-private cybersecurity support group, which will help small firms respond to troubles in cooperation with insurance companies and others.

In addition, the program calls for fostering cybersecurity-related human resources through the provision of technical guidance to young people. Jiji Press
