January 11, 2019

London--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his British counterpart, Theresa May, agreed Thursday that the two countries will establish a new economic partnership as Britain prepares to leave the European Union.

The two leaders, meeting in London, agreed that the effort will include exploring the possibility of concluding a bilateral economic agreement. They also agreed to strengthen maritime security cooperation.

"We will now deepen our strategic partnership further, looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the next decade" as Britain leaves the EU, the leaders said in a joint statement issued after their meeting. Jiji Press
