Japan sinks to 58th in UN happiness ranking

March 21, 2019

New York--Japan dropped to 58th in the global happiness rankings, a U.N. report showed Wednesday.

The latest rankings were determined by such factors as per-capita gross domestic product, healthy life expectancy, freedom and corruption between 2016 and 2018, according to the 2019 World Happiness Report.

Japan, which ranked 54th in the previous rankings, sank to just one notch above Honduras, a Central American country battered by gang violence and poverty.

This year's report, which covered 156 countries, found that Finland was the happiest country while South Sudan was the least. The Nordic country topped the list for the second consecutive year.

The United States ranked 19th and China 93rd. Jiji Press
