Japanese forces joining US-Philippine exercises

October 7, 2019

The Japanese Self Defense Force will join Wednesday's military exercises, dubbed Kamandag 3, between Philippines and United States.

In a press release, the US Embassy confirmed that the Japanese forces will participate not only in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) training but also join a drill using the amphibious assault vehicles (AAV).

"Japanese forces will train alongside US and Philippine forces in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions," the embassy stated.

"New for this year’s Kamandag, US, Philippine, and Japanese forces will conduct assault amphibious vehicle training together," it added.

The embassy did not give details on the number of forces taking part in the drill lasting from Oct. 9 to 18, but it said Philippine and US forces will also conduct other operations in various training sites throughout Luzon and Palawan.

"During Kamandag 3, US and Philippine forces will conduct amphibious operations, live-fire training, urban operations, aviation operations, and counter-terrorism response operations," it stated.

"It will also be the first to include US and Philippine low-altitude air defense training and threat reaction training. Together, these activities represent an increase in military capability and a commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region and demonstrate the ability to forward deploy forces in the event of a crisis or natural disaster," the embassy said.

"The exercise will also feature cooperative health engagements, civil affairs interactions, and community relations events throughout Luzon.  The purpose is to exchange information on hygiene skills, life support, first response, and safety protocols, as well as conduct religious ministry, primary education, and athletic events," it stated

"Humanitarian and civic assistance activities enable our service members to foster improved military to military ties and provide support to local communities," it added. Robina Asido/DMS
