February 28, 2020
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he is not yet aware about talks about the possible crafting of a new deal between the Philippines and United States to replace the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).
"No. There is none as far as I know," he said when asked if he is aware of the talks between Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez and US Ambassador Sung Kim.
In a forum in Makati City, Romualdez revealed that he and Kim are trying to find ways to craft a new agreement to replace the VFA which may end in August.
Lorenzana refused to comment, saying he is not privy to the talks of the two ambassadors.
"I have not been privy to their talks, so I don't want comment yet," he said.
The notice for the termination of VFA was formaly sent by the Department of Foreign Affairs to the United States Embassy in Manila on February 11.
According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippines and United States have a total of 318 activities for 2020, of which 155 are non-military while 163 include meetings, other related forums and 10 major military exercises. Robina Asido/DMS
