LRT-2 fails to resume operations after Katipunan station fire
October 3, 2019
The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) will not resume operations Thursday after a fire broke out near Katipunan station at 11:24 am.
In a post on its Twitter account on 4:39 pm, the LRT-2 management said: ''No LRT-2 operations from Santolan to Recto today. Passengers are advised to find alternative modes of transportation. Our sincerest apologies."
The fire was contained at 12:30 pm. LRT-2 did not say if operations along the 16.75 kilometer line will resume Friday morning.
In a radio interview over dzBB, LRTA spokesperson Hernando Cabrera explained that Katipunan station caught fire after the rectifier substation 5 tripped.
The incident resulted in the temporary loss of power supply and limited train operations.
"The rectifier is like a transformer. It can also be compared to a power surge protector. Its purpose is to regulate our power supply," Cabrera said.
"Since there's no power supply in that area, technically the whole line will suspend operations because the trains will get stranded at that stretch," he added. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
