Magsaysay municipality declares state of calamity due to quake

The municipality of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur passed a resolution placing it under a state of calamity because of the damage caused by the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit the province of North Cotabato on Wednesday night.

"The 16th Sangguniang Bayan Members headed by Vice Mayor Donnabel Joy Mejia passed a resolution declaring the municipality of Magsaysay under state of calamity based on the recommendation of the MDRRMC ( Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council) chaired by Mayor Arthur Davin," said Anthony Allada, spokesman of the municipal government of Magsaysay in his Facebook post Friday.

Davin said the municipality of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur was placed under state of calamity "due to the severity and extent of damages and casualties caused by magnitude 6.3 earthquake where P200 million estimated worth of properties, buildings and others were destroyed."

Out of the total of five deaths from the quake, three died in Magsaysay  which was hit by landslide induced by the tremor.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 11 spokesman Leslie Francisco said the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operation Center was placed under blue alert  to monitor the damage cause by earthquake.

In its latest report the National Risk Reduction and Managment Council (NDRRMC) said a total of 613 families or 3,068 persons were affected by the earthquake in southern and central Mindanao.

The death toll remains at five while a total of 89 were injured in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, central and southern Mindanao.

The NDRRMC said a total of 144 infrastructure were damaged in some regions. Robina Asido/DMS
