Malacanang congratulated Friday newly-elected Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, saying his fresh mandate would deepen the relations of the two countries.
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Mahathir is an "old friend" of the Philippines.
"(H)is fresh mandate augurs well for the deep relations between the Philippines and Malaysia," he said.
He also noted that Malaysia is a "brother nation and dependable partner" of the Philippines for having played a constructive role towards the attainment of peace and stability in Mindanao.
Malaysia had facilitated the peace talks between the Philippine government and the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front, leading to the signing of a comprehensive agreement on the Bangsamoro during the previous administration.
"We are thus confident that the strong partnership between our countries would continue to be enhanced in the years to come," Roque said.
Mahathir was sworn in Thursday as Malaysia's seventh prime minister. He succeeded Najib Razak, whose administration was accused of massive corruption.
