Manila, PLDT ink free WiFi deal in some areas

Manila City Hall and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co wireless unit Smart Communications Inc.signed a memorandum of agreement to provide free internet in different government establishments and sites.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno along with PLDT chair and CEO Manuel Pangilinan, Smart Chief Revenue Officer Al Panlilo, and Google Philippines Head of Public Policy Yves Gonzales signed a memorandum on Wednesday.
"We are happy to work with the city government of Manila and Mayor Isko in helping provide connectivity to the city and bring the benefits of the Internet to more Filipinos across the country," Pangilinan said.
The free Smart WiFi will be installed in the city hall of Manila, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Universidad de Manila, and the Museo Pambata.
"According to Smart officials, after signing the memorandum they will install free WiFi in the designated sites. The users can access it in 30 to 60 days," Manila Public Information Office chief Julius Leonen said.
According to PLDT-Smart, the WiFi units which will be installed in the city will be among the "more than 400" live Google Station sites nationwide. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
