Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Wednesday ordered a clean-up operation in Barangay E. Rodriguez as a response to President Rodrigo Duterte's call during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) for intensified measures to protect the environment.
A joint task force composed of Quezon City Department of Public Order and Safety (QC-DPOS), QC Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department (EPWMD), and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted sidewalk clearing operations in Ermin Garcia Street near Q-Mart.
"We join President Duterte's call for local government units to intensify their campaign to protect the environment. This is not new in Quezon City because we already have several programs which aim for a green and sustainable environment," Belmonte said in a statement.
Belmonte also inspected the Tandang Sora Market due to several complaints on illegal vendors and rampant obstructions in sidewalks.
“In the process of these clearing operations, we will be mindful always on the mantra: serving with our hearts. We will act humanely,” she added.
Belmonte said among her priority programs are the clearing of riverways and drainage and the installation of Materials Recovery Facilities in 142 barangays. According to her, these projects could improve waste collection and segregation and mitigate flooding. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
