February 14, 2020
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Friday said the number of single persons in the country has increased "over more than a decade."
In a census of population on marital status for Filipinos aged 10 and above conducted by PSA every 10 years, it showed that in 2015 a total of 34.8 million or at least 44 percent of Filipinos are single.
The population increased by 3.5 million compared to a 2010 report which revealed that 31.3 million persons were single.
"While the number of single persons increased over more than a decade, the proportion to the total population 10 years old and over remained at close to 44 percent from the year 2000 to 2015," PSA explained.
"Married persons comprised approximately 45 percent over the period 2000 to 2010 but shrunk to about 41 percent in 2015," it added.
Majority of the total single population were male, accounting for 54.1 percent. This means that there are 118 single males for every 100 single females for those 20 years old and above.
"The sex ratio increased to 131 males for every 100 females for singles aged 20 years and over. Discounting those with ages 10 to 19 years old, 56.7 percent was male while 43.3 percent was female," said PSA.
Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) recorded the highest sex ratio of single population at 127.8 in 2015. Region XIII (Caraga) followed with 127.7 sex ratio and MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) with 127.1.
The region with the least sex ratio among single persons was the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) at 103.
Across provinces, Compostela Valley had the highest sex ratio among singles at 141.3 followed by Davao Occidental and Quirino with sex ratios of 135.1 and 134.7, respectively.
The lowest ratio was recorded in Lanao del Sur with 97.4, with males outnumbering females. DMS
