More than 1,000 new HIV in October: DOH

More than 1,000 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were reported in October, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
Based on the October 2018 HIV/AIDS Registry of the Philippines, there were 1,072 new HIV cases, which is higher than the 919 new HIV cases in October 2017.
Of the total October cases, nineteen percent or 208 had clinical manifestations of being advanced HIV infection or acquired immunodeficiency deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Thirty died from HIV/AIDS for the month.
Sexual contact remains the predominant mode of transmission with 1,044 (97 percent), of which 902 (86 percent) are males who have sex with males.
One third (32 percent or 343) of the new HIV cases were from the National Capital Region (NCR); followed by Calabarzon (17 percent or 187 cases); Central Luzon (11 percent or 121); Central Visayas (8 percent, 82); and Western Visayas (seven percent or 76) .
From January to October, there are 9,605 new HIV cases, including 1,728 AIDS cases, and 488 deaths.
Since 1984, there are 60,207 HIV cases, with 6,796 AIDS cases and 2,946 deaths. DMS
