Moreno unseats Estrada as Manila mayor
May 14, 2019
Manila Vice Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso dethroned incumbent Mayor Joseph Estrada.
Estrada garnered 210,605 votes while former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim had 137,041 votes.
The 82-year-old Estrada, a former Philippine president, was mayor of San Juan for 50 years before becoming a senator and vice president.
His grand daughter Janella Ejercito lost to Vice Mayor Francis Zamora in the San Juan mayoral race.
Asked if his decision to raise real estate taxes was a reason for his loss, Estrada told dzMM;'' I have to bite the bullet. I have to provide services for the people. I have to pay debts.''
Estrada said he has '' no hard feelings'' with his defeat and stressed that it is not the end of road politically for his family.
Estrada never lost a mayoral race since winning in San Juan in 1969.
''There is always a tipping point,'' said San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, who got a fresh term, in an interview with the Daily Manila Shimbun. Zamora was Estrada's executive secretary when he was president.
Moreno said he thinks Estrada's family "needs him now.''
He has already served the people and I think he did enough for the country and the city," Moreno added.
Moreno's running-mate Honey Lacuna claimed the vice mayor spot with 394,766 votes. She defeated former congressman Amado Bagatsing with 267,286 votes. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
