Moreno urges LTFRB to penalize jeepney drivers who do not honor senior citizens discounts

July 23, 2019

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Tuesday urged the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to penalize jeepney drivers for not giving fare discounts to senior citizens.

In a press conference, Moreno addressed jeepney drivers - particularly those plying the Baclaran-Divisoria route - who still ask passengers to pay ''unfair'' fares.

"You still continue, our poor and elderly citizens are still being oppressed by you. They will pay twenty pesos but the travel's worth is only ten pesos. That's unreasonable, that's unfair for the poor people," Moreno said.

Moreno said he talked to the LTFRB . He told drivers there will be a penalty if they will continuously implement this.

"I promised that if you won't follow the rules... enriching yourselves at the expense of the riding public, qwe will file a suspension of franchise before the LTFRB,'' he said,

''I will not be the complainant. It will be the City of Manila, the city government of Manila will file a suspension of the entire Baclaran-Divisoria line'', Moreno explained.

He also warned jeepney drivers of MCU to Blumentritt, Cubao-Divisoria, Maypajo-Juan Luna, Padre Faura-Pedro Gil routes to follow the correct fare.

"I'm not after the penalty. I am after order. I am trying to reach out to more people as possible. I want normal employees and laborers to finish their eight-hour shifts to go home safely and pay exact and right fare.  I want them to go home to their families like that," Moreno said.
