The Philippine Navy lauded the victory of boxer Jerwin Ancajas after he won against Japanese Ryuichi Funai in his seventh defense of the International Boxing Federation superflyweight belt early this month.
Cpt. Jerber Anthony Belonio, Naval Reserve public affairs officer said Ancajas, a Navy reservist, was recognized by officers, men and women of the Philippine Navy in a ceremony at Acero Hall, Marine Barracks Rudiardo Brown, Fort Bonifacio on Tuesday.
Belonio said "Ancajas, is a chief petty officer in the reserve force, came home after defeating Ryuichi Funai for his seventh title defense at Stockton, California on May 5, 2019."
"Ancajas won the bout on the seventh round via technical knockout," he said.
Belonio said the ceremony was led by the Flag Officer in Command, Vice Adm. Robert Empedrad with the commander of the Naval Reserve Command, Brig. Gen. Dante Hidalgo.
He said Empedrad and Hodalgo presented a plaque of recognition to Ancajas.
Belonio said in his speech, Ancajas "expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the
tremendous support of the Philippine Navy."
"He was emotional while thanking Vice Adm. Empedrad for all the support that was given to him especially during his five-week training at Marine Base Gregorio Lim, Ternate, Cavite," he said. Robina Asido/DMS
