NCRPO says simple, quick 34th EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary
February 25, 2020
The commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution was peaceful and orderly, said the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Tuesday.
NCRPO Chief Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas said the commemoration which includes wreath laying and flag raising ceremonies at the EDSA People Power monument in Quezon City was attended by 1,000 participants from different government agencies.
"The program has finished peacefully and orderly as of now as you can see we haven't seen people conducting rally or demonstrations here at the freedom park," he said.
"We only have around 1000 participants in the program. All are government employees so there are no stakeholders and non-government organizations who attended this morning," he added.
Sinas said this year's solemn and simple commemoration of People Power Revolution is much better compared to the anniversaries during the previous administration.
"The flag raising and wreathlaying went on smoothly. The program lasted for 12 minutes," he said.
"Now it is much solemn, much easy and only few from government offices attended unlike before during the time of President (Benigno) Aquino (III) even police have joined what they called as salubong," said Sinas.
"For me what we do now is much better. It is more faster, solemn and the event does not have much effect on traffic," he added.
Joey Concepcion, vice chairman of the EDSA People Power Commission and Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Commissioner, emphasized the effort of the current administration to end poverty in the country which he describe as the real democracy.
"In the end the real democracy really is trying to help our Filipino eleviate from poverty and that is this government under president Duterte is trying to do, real democracy is really improving the lives of many Filipino people," he said.
"I think in the end democracy is when we free everybody from poverty and that is the real challenge that we face the remaining two years of our president together with the different government agencies we planned to really mount a very agressive effort to help every Filipino succeed in life," he added.
Sinas said even after the program security at the EDSA Shrine will continue while alert status raised by the NCRPO will be maintained until 8 pm. Robina Asido/DMS
