No need to create law for a certain group: PNP on SOGIE

September 10, 2019

The head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said Filipinos are protected by the 1987 Constitution so there is no need to create a new law that will fit a certain group.

During a press briefing, Police General Oscar Albayalde was asked about his stand on the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality ( SOGIE) bill.

"The Constitution provides ample protection for everyone already and we have laws that protects our individual rights and privacy," he said.

"My take on that is we cannot make laws that is tailor fit to a certain group only. Let's not make laws just to satisfy a certain person, a certain individual or a certain group otherwise everybody will have their own laws," Albayalde added.

The PNP chief said they do not discriminate but there is a law that needs to be followed.

"There is no need actually because we are already protected by the Constitution and the laws of the land equally," said Albayalde.

"For now, we really cannot see any wisdom in crafting a law just for that purpose alone," he said, even joking that bald people who are being discriminated should also have their own law.

The law is being deliberated at the Senate after a comfort room incident involving a transgender, a lady security guard and a janitress. Ella
