Only left-leaning partylists oppose return of ROTC: AFP

May 30, 2019

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said only left-leaning partylist groups opposed the return of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. (ROTC).

These was emphasized by Col. Noel Detoyato, AFP Public Affairs chief, after some groups claimed that the ROTC program being proposed to Grade 11 and 12 will only teach blind obedience among the students.

“Only the left-leaning groups oppose, Kabataan Party List, the Gabriela, so they are the only ones who are opposing every time that topic is being talked about,” he said.

“It is an anathema to their objectives, which is to recruit the youth to their side,” he added.

Detoyato said the return of the ROTC program has earned a lot of support from different sectors.

“We get a lot of support in social media, in text messages and it was overwhelmingly voted in the positive by the Congress and we thank them for that,” he said.

Recently, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading the House Bill No. 8961 or the proposed ROTC Act.

The bill received 167 affirmative votes, four negative votes and no abstention from the members of the House. Robina Asido/DMS
