Over 3,000 firms shut down, retrench workers

Over 3,000 companies have shut down or retrenched workers due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
In the latest Job Displacement Monitoring Report of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), a total of 3,189 companies had displaced workers totalling to 90,215, as of June 21.
"A total of 90,215 workers were displaced nationwide from 3,189 establishments from January 2020 to present as reported by the DOLE Regional Offices, with 91 percent of which reduced workforce (2,895), while the remaining 9 percent reported permanent closure (294)," said the DOLE report.
It said 294 firms that reported permanent closure resulted in 7,600 workers displaced.
The 2,895 companies that retrenched workers affected 82,615 employees.
The National Capital Region (NCR) had the most number of displaced workers with 45,046; followed by Calabarzon with 17,805.
Next were Central Luzon (8,107); Cordillera Administrative Region (5,136); Central Visayas (3,992); Ilocos (2,581); and Northern Mindanao (2,173).
In terms of major industry group, the biggest displaced workers were in the administrative and support service (28,192); followed by other service activities (10,635); and manufacturing (10,260).
June showed the highest number of reporting establishments with 1,809, which meant 36,086 workers losing jobs. DMS
