Malacanang assured support for the affected residents in Itbayat and Basco after two earthquakes jolted Batanes Saturday morning.
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Palace is closely monitoring the aftermath of the Intensity 5.4 and Intensity 5.9 quakes that hit the two towns.
"Responsible instrumentalities of the national government such as the Office of the Civil Defense, are continuously coordinating with distressed local government units, including the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Batanes, as relief operations are going on and are in full swing," Panelo said.
He added that President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered all agencies to provide assistance to the victims.
Police General Oscar Albayalde, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), expressed condolence to families of those who perished.
"Today, we offer our sincere condolences for the families of those who lost their love ones during the earthquake in Batanes. We send our prayers for healing of those who were injured. I have ordered our policemen to provide security in all areas and mobilize to help during the retrieval operations," he said.
"Batanes is one of our most treasured tourist destination. The place and its peace loving people has been host to many tourist locally and internationally. At this most challenging time, we offer our help and together, we will help rebuild their lives again," he added. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
