Philippine daily COVID-19 cases surge to new mark of 1,046
May 30, 2020
Days before the government eases quarantine controls on Metro Manila due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019), the Department of Health ( DOH) reported 1,046 new cases Friday night.
This is the highest number of COVID-19 cases since the Philippines imposed enhanced community quarantine on March 17. The old mark was 539 on Thursday.
It is the fourth straight day of increase in daily cases. The total number of COVID-19 cases are now 16,634.
Out of the 1,046 newly-reported cases, only 46 can be considered as "fresh cases" with 1,000 are "late cases".
"Fresh cases" are test results released to patients within the last three days.
"Late cases" are test results released to patients after more than 4 days.
The DOH said the increase in "late cases" being reported is due to more complete and timely submission of laboratories of test results.
Metro Manila, where majority of the country's cases are found, shifts into a general community quarantine on Monday where some businesses will reopen and partial public transport will be restored.
The surge in the new cases was due to 1,000 test results released to patients after more than four days, the DOH said.
The total number of deaths are at 942, with 21 fatalities reported. Recoveries reached 3,720 as 122 patients recovered from COVID-19 cases. DMS
