Phivolcs lifts tsunami advisory
December 29, 2018
The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) lifted a tsunami warning Saturday afternoon after magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental.
As of 3 pm, tsunami warning in Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostella Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, Davao City, Davao del Sur, Sarangani and South Cotabato were cancelled by Phivolcs.
"The sea has gone back to normal level so we have terminated or cancelled the tsunami advisory," Renato Solidum Jr., Phivolcs head, said in an interview with ANC.
However, aftershocks brought by the 7.2 earthquake are still expected in the affected areas.
"We are expecting aftershocks in the area," Solidum said. He added the aftershocks are not expected to bring any damage.
Due to the lifting of the tsunami advisory, beaches and coastal areas are safe and can be accessed by residents. "We have confirmed that the levels changed back to normal level. People are now free to go to the beach area," Solidum added. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
