Phivolcs said magnitude 6.6 quake related to last week’s 6.3 tremor
October 29, 2019
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the 6.6 magnitude earthquake Tuesday morning in Cotabato is related to the magnitude 6.3 quake last October 16.
Portions of southern Philippines were jolted by 6.6 earthquake around 9 am.
"Most of the time during strong earthquakes we expect aftershocks. They are mostly not as strong as the initial quake but it can happen," Phivolcs Director Solidum said in a press conference.
"In the 6.3 Tulunan quake last October 16, we believe that wasn't the strongest quake based on the fault line movement, which we think happened this morning," he added.
Solidum assured there will be no tsunami.
"There's no possibility of a tsunami. Those living in the coastal areas of southern Mindanao doesn't have to worry about a tsunami as the quake's origin is inland," the Phivolcs director said.
Phivolcs warned aftershocks are expected.
"We know that this area is seismically active region. There are sources of earthquakes around this area. So we always expect that there will be some strong earthquakes happening in this area," said Jeffrey Perez of Phivolcs in a separate interview over ANC. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
