Phivolcs urges people near Wednesday’s quake to be alert
October 17, 2019
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) urged people in the southern portions of the country to be alert following a magnitude 6.3 tremor that hit North Cotabato Wednesday evening.
"There are a lot of fault lines in North Cotabato and some of them are already moving, particularly in some parts of Lanao," Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum explained Thursday.
"This is not a long fault but it can trigger moderate quakes like the one that hit...last night," he added.
Although additional earthquakes will not have magnitude 7 strength, Solidum said it might damage houses and buildings with weak foundations.
"We urge the public to take quake preparations seriously and they should also be strict in following the Building Code," Solidum said. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
