Phivolcs urges people to stop spreading misinformation about tsunami
November 1, 2019
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( Phivolcs) urged residents of earthquake-hit towns to stop misinformation on possible tsunami.
Following three strong quakes in Southern Mindanao, particularly in Cotabato, residents feared tsunami will be caused by the tremors.
However, Phivolcs said there will be no tsunamis in the affected areas since the quake happened in land.
"If the earthquake happened below land, normally it won't generate tsunamis. (In the case of recent earthquakes in southern Mindanao), the tremors will not cause tsunami," said Phivolcs Officer-in-Charge for Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division Ishmael Narag said in an interview over dzBB.
Narag advised the public to refrain from passing unverified information.
"If you happen to receive a message on possibility of a tsunami, please do not forward it to others," he said. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
