PNP awards five personnel for achievements in police operations

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday awarded five PNP personnel for their achievements during different police operations.

During PNP’s flag raising ceremony at Camp Crame, Police Brigadier General Rwin Pagkalinawan, Police Corporal Jesson Gutual, Police Major Genevieve Julian, and Police Master Sergeant Santiago Arienda II were awarded for their participation during Taal Volcano operations.

Patrolman Julius Walang was awarded for arresting the drunken driver of a taxicab who almost ran him down on December 31 in Baguio City.

In a video that went viral, Walang held tightly on the hood of the cab driven by Jone Dominguez Buclay who tried to flee because of a traffic violation. Walang accosted the cabbie and tried to issue a ticket to him for causing traffic along Abanao Street.

Charges, including attempted homicide, was filed by Walang against the driver on Jan. 7.  

Pagkalinawan and Gutual from PNP- Maritime Group (MG) received the Medalya ng Pagtulong sa Nasalanta (PNP Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Award) for rescuing abandoned animals after the phreatic eruption of Taal Volcano last January 12.

Julian from the PNP- Directorate for Human Resource and Doctrine Development (DHRDD) received Medalya ng Papuri (PNP Commendation Medal) for helping a sick mother in breastfeeding her baby at an evacuation center in Calaca, Batangas.

Medalya ng Ugnayang Pampulisya (Police Relations Medal) was given to Arienda from the Bicol police for providing amusement to the families affected by the activity of Taal Volcano to enhance their emotional state and well-being.

Walang of the Cordillera police got  the  Medalya ng Kagalingan (PNP Medal of Merit) for arresting a drunken man in Baguio City last December 31.

Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa, PNP chief, in his speech said the PNP must empower their people as professional growth and career development are key factors in an organization success.

“Thus, in order to boost the morale and sustain motivation, the PNP needs to provide individual professional development opportunities and assistance to deserving personnel which includes the following components: replacement and promotions, awards and decorations, educational and scholarship grant, health and legal assistance,” Gamboa said.

“Enhancing the career development of the personnel will help them to efficiently perform their respective task and become more productive… Leading them to make positive contribution to both the organization and the community they serve,” he added.

Last January 31, Gamboa also awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting () to the personnel of 1st Bukidnon Provincial Mobile Force Company who were wounded when their patrol vehicle which served as lead escort of Police Brigadier General Joselito Salido, DIPO Eastern Mindanao, convoy was ambushed in Talakag, Bukidnon by alleged NPA rebels last January 29.

The awardees were Police Capatain Ramil Quirante Gighe, Police Senior Master Sergeant Giovanni Bautista Malinab, Police Staff Sergeant Jerwin Salas Genilla, and Patrolman Juvannie Tugahan Libradilla.

The Medalya ng Kadakilaan was awarded to Police Staff Sergeant Venancio Aledon Dugaduga, Police Corporal Wiljun Llamos Tecson and Police Corporal Edwin Dawaling Saliwa who were detailed as security convoy during the incident.

The PNP chief also paid his last respects to Police Corporal Rowel Piquero Sumaylo who died during the ambush.

Gamboa awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan (Posthumous Award) to Sumaylo and extended his condolences and assistance to the cop's family. Ella Dionisio/DMS
