The Philippine National Police (PNP) punished around 2, 199 erring cops through their intensified internal cleansing.

In a conference with the Ateneo De Manila on Monday, the PNP showed their data from October 14 to February 25, 2020, where 681 cops were dismissed from the service and and 985 were suspended due to various illegal activities.

A total of 258 cops were reprimanded and and 159 policemen faced forfeiture of salary.

Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa, the PNP chief, also demoted 82 policemen, 17 were restricted and 17 have their privileges withheld.

PNP said from 2016, over 13,000 policemen faced sanctions to cleanse the PNP of the rogue personnel.

Gamboa also launched "Project Tarung", a program to clean the image of the country's police force to the public.

According to PNP, “Tarung” is the root word of “Katarungan” (Justice).

“We fully understand that the public support to the police is important,” Gamboa said.

The program was based on the recommendation of the study of Ateneo’s School of Government.

Recommendations were made revisiting organizational culture, changed management, strengthen and elevating the sub-culture, systematic human resources strategy, and central data monitoring.

"We will continue to transform the whole PNP we ensure to implement internal cleansing," the PNP chief added.

Gamboa assured that personnel committing illegal acts would face sanction.

"Under my leadership, we will write a new story to an effective action driven and motivated PNP," he said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
