PNP signs agreement to make people take care of national flag

The Philippine National Police (PNP) with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and Pronove Tai and Associates Philippines, Inc. signed a Memorandum of Agreement for reviving the Filipinos' care of the national flag.

The agreement named “Salute to a Clean Flag Project” aims to educate and create awareness among the public and private stakeholders on the proper display of the national colors.

“To revive patriotism through the encouragement of replacement of old, worn-out and tattered Philippine National Flags and hoisting of clean flags across the country,” Police General Oscar Albayalde said in a press conference.

“With this, the PNP shall enforce the provisions of the Flag Law on the proper display, storage and safekeeping of the flags,” he added.

NHCP chair Rene Escalante, in his speech. said it is the Filipino’s duty to honor and respect the Philippine flag.

“The Philippine flag is a very important element in our country,” he said.

Escalante said they noticed some of PNP’s local office, public schools and government offices has worn out and thorn flags.

He said with Ayala Foundation, they will be giving around free 100,000 flags in different parts of the country which have started last September 2018.

The NHCP chair said a lot of people are facing charges for disrespecting the Philippine flag citing the incidents of people using the flag as mop and cover on their vehicles.

Under the Republic Act No. 8491 also known as the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines” section 14, a flag worn out through wear and tear shall not be thrown away.

It shall be solemnly burned to avoid misuse or desecration. The flag shall be replaced immediately when it begins to show signs of wear and tear.  Ella Dionisio/DMS
